Why does PSSAR exist?

Total collapse of the educational system in Gaza/Palestine

The war in Gaza has had a profound impact on the education system, resulting in its total collapse. All universities have been destroyed, and numerous schools have suffered severe damage. This becomes even more heartbreaking when considering the significance of education for Palestinians. Despite challenges, Palestine boasts one of the highest literacy rates globally.

Beyond the physical loss of educational infrastructure, the region has also witnessed the tragic loss of hundreds of professors and teachers, further destabilizing the educational system in Gaza and, more broadly, in Palestine. The deliberate destruction of universities and educational institutions has greatly impeded academic activities in Gaza.  The war has resulted in not only loss of life, but also the loss of hope for all Gazans.

Recognizing the significant consequences for the academic community, there is an urgent appeal for international academic assistance to contribute to the reconstruction of educational opportunities for students and educators in Gaza. This is the reason for our existence.

Join us in providing hope and empowerment! Together, we can make a difference.

Context in Gaza/Palestine

The war in Gaza has reached a scale that has not been seen in modern history. Within the span of three months, over 52,000 civilians have been killed and more than 2 million have been forcefully displaced from their homes. Integral aspects of civilian life such as schools, universities, hospitals and roads have collapsed and will take many years to rebuild. According to the United Nations, the magnitude of the response to this humanitarian crisis and the associated operational constraints  “are beyond what has ever been seen before in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.”
